Foraging rule one: there are old mushroom hunters and bold mushroom hunters

...but no old, bold mushroom hunters.

If you're getting into foraging: start with the impossible-to-confuse species (chanterelles have false gills, look like forked ridges), join a local mycological society, and never eat anything on one ID source. The hobby is wonderful precisely because the stakes force you to actually learn.

What's everyone finding this season?

joined a mushroom walk last autumn knowing nothing. the ID people are the nicest obsessives on earth, 10/10 recommend

tide pool equivalent: look with your eyes, poke with nothing. the anemone does not want your finger and some of the pretty ones bite back
